My New Years Eve? More than sedate.
I was to bed at five to 11. I am such a loser.
But yesterday was a travel day and it was fun. It was one of those "round the World in 80 days" time-table things, or like a Sherlock Homes story (That is the whole point of RTWiED--it's a novel about transit schedules). I got up and checked the tables. Got down to the Tiber Light Rail station near my dad's house about 10:15 or so. Dad gave me me a $2 ticket he had lying around. That line goes straiht to the Amtrak sation. Igot there in plenty of time to cros the street and buy breafast (soup, still feeing a bit queasy). Caught the 11:10 Capital to the Ba Area and took it to Richmond ($21). This, instead of going to San Fracisco or Oakland is what the locals do because it connects to BART there. Took BART to Milbrea ($5.05). As we were pulling in so was the CalTrain going south. I sprinted up the stairs, over the foo bridge and own the other side and madethe train, but they don't sell tickets on board anymore so I had to get of at the next stop, Burlingame, buy a ticket ($3.50), and wait 35 minutes for the next train. Only hiccup to the trip. And the conductor never came by to collect it. Took the Cal Train from there to Palo Alto where
catrinmists picked m up. Gotto Palo Alto at 4:05.
I love traveling lke that, so long as it is on trains and not busses. It's that whole victorian/Agatha Christie/lfred Hitchcock/James Bond/Artemis Gordon thing.Trains are civilized. I can walk around, read, relax.Of course, when I did the 30 AMTRAK rail tour in '96 I gained 25 pounds, much of it on the 4 day cross country final leg. That was a bit much. The view is great from the Capital (not so much Cal Train, which is in town, and we all know what parts of town the tracks are in). Next time I'll take the Capital all the way to Fremont and catch the Dumbarton Expres bus, which oes right by the house. It would be faster, but it would also involve a bus and be less romantic.
Last night, not wantingto drive to the city, constrained by budgets and frankly tired and worn out (and me still a bit ill) we stayed in with the seven cats andI turned in early. But it was a happy New Year nonetheless.
